When cities grow, so do their cracks.
A city is more than buildings, roads, and zoning laws—it is a living space of encounter.
Each street corner, every fleeting interaction, carries the potential for connection.
Yet today’s cities, driven by technocratic and utilitarian logics of development, are
increasingly structured to sort, separate, and silence.
What gets lost is the basic urban promise:
that cities are places where people can move, meet, speak, and live together with dignity.

The 2025 Do You A Flavor 10th Anniversary International Forum, “Moving Forward through the Cracks: Empathy, Action, and Restructuring of Cities,” extends a warm invitation to global organizers, individuals with lived experiences of poverty, and artists. This forum aims to transcend conventional poverty alleviation approaches, focusing instead on fostering genuine connections within a risk society by highlighting the voices of the unhoused, impoverished, and social activists within urban gaps.
The forum will explore how digitalization, globalization, and neoliberalism exacerbate social exclusion. Through three plenary sessions and three parallel workshops, we will collectively seek innovative possibilities within systemic fissures.
Ultimately, the forum seeks to walk alongside those with lived experiences, co-creating a more inclusive urban vision through the sharing of creative and unconventional practices, dialogues, and discussions. By seeing, engaging in dialogue, and journeying together, we aspire to actively construct new democratic practices and weave the fabric of a truly compassionate city.

How is Poverty Shaped? Practices and Understandings from Local Contexts
Practitioners from Europe, Singapore and Taiwan will be invited to share how poverty is perceived and responded to across different cultural, historical and institutional contexts. Drawing from the experiences of working with families and communities with poverty in Switzerland, street counts and policy formation in Singapore, and non-traditional action with unhoused people in Taiwan, this session aims to outline the multifaceted nature of experience and definition of poverty.
From Experiencing Poverty to Collective Action: Reclaiming Voice and Power
Japanese female unhoused artist, co-founders of Homelessness Museum in UK and the project team of “Writing Words” will be invited to share how people experiencing homelessness can speak up from the silence and transform into action-takers through collective practices. The session will also ponder how voices, solidarity and praxis can construct a form of public action in response to oppression.
How Cross-Organizational Networks Respond to Poverty
Representatives from NGOs in South Korea, Japan and Taiwan are invited to share their experiences in participating in poverty-related alliances, exploring how cross-organizational networks can facilitate collaborative actions and promote institutional changes. Through exchange of practical experiences and strategies, we reflect challenges of inter-organizational collaboration and potentials of social transformation.

Deconstructing Social Impact
through Creative Practice
Speakers from Hong Kong will share how to sustain their publicness through a series of creative practices under highly social tension and constraints. From street action to experimental strategies, they try to unpack how creativity is not just a form, but rather a method of social action for intervention and voice.
2.
Spatial Perspectives —
Invisible Walls and
Resistance in the Margins
Drawing from the experiences in the Philippines and Taiwan, the session will investigate how the public space design in cities can result in exclusion. Taking the actions and struggles of the poor as a starting point, we rethink the governance of public space, right of use, and invisible walls in cities.
3.
Collective Action and
Civic Participation
in Poverty Issues
Taking practices in Hong Kong, Japan and Taiwan as examples, the session will discuss how the general public can join the action, establish connections and transform into collective efforts responding to inequality. The session will also probe the tension and relationship-building between the general public, people experiencing poverty/homelessness and practitioners.

Current Realities and Policy Contexts of Poverty in Different Countries
Institutions can reflect how societies perceive poverty. This session seeks to unpack the context: How do external social conditions shape institutional responses? And how do these institutions either hinder or enable the fulfillment of real needs? Participants will exchange insights on national contexts, current policy systems, and action cases, drawing inspiration from each other’s experiences to foster structural change and mutual support.

Mutual Learning from Real Experiences of Empowerment and Companionship
There is no model answer to companionship: How do we balance between having empathy and presenting a goal of empowerment? In the process of interaction, how do we maintain boundaries and sustain energy? Practitioners’ experiences include both successes and failures. Therefore, this session aims to create a space to exchange actions and practices from different countries, respond to each other and together explore more sustainable approaches to companionship.

Care for Practitioners and Activists
This session focuses on the care of trauma and support networks for practitioners and activists. Assisting and accompanying others is frequently discussed in social work; however, self-healing is rarely mentioned in this regard. What do practitioners need? How can genuine support be cultivated? Activists will share stories of trauma and recovery, finding ways for going further—and more gently—together.

This session focuses on the care of trauma and support networks for practitioners and activists. Social work often emphasizes assisting and accompanying others, yet rarely creates space to discuss one’s own healing. What are the needs of the practitioners themselves, and how can genuine support be cultivated? Activists will share stories of trauma and recovery, opening a collective search for ways to journey further—and more gently—together.

Since 2014, Do You A Flavor, a Taipei-based collective working on urban poverty and
homelessness, has been tracing what we call the cracks in the city—spaces not just forgotten,
but actively excluded from official planning and imagination:
train stations after midnight, park benches at dawn, shelter entrances tucked in narrow
alleyways.
In these zones of exception, we’ve seen not only struggle, but creativity, care, and agency.
We’ve learned that people experiencing homelessness are not simply service recipients—they
are theorists, strategists, and builders of social life.
Over the years, our work has grown into a practice that is horizontal, responsive, and shaped
by lived experience.
It is a way of making space—not just physically, but politically and emotionally—for more
ways of living to co-exist in the city.
